Hot temperatures and stormy weather conditions may influence the care plan that your trees require during the summer. Review the suggestions that follow to promote healthy tree growth throughout the season.

Deep Watering Sessions

Deep watering supports the development of strong root systems. Deep watering promotes the efficient use of water. Because water is introduced well below the surface of the ground, soil conditions remain moist longer than if water is only introduced at surface level.

Deep watering prevents root girdling. Girdling is a condition that consists of roots growing around the trunk. Girdling is a serious problem. The root formation that girdling is noted for could suffocate a tree. Girdling often occurs when trees receive an inadequate amount of water.

To provide your trees with plenty of water, set up a drip irrigation system or a sprinkler. Water your property during the morning. The temperature will be cooler in the morning, which will prevent water evaporation as you are performing a deep watering session. Allow the soil that surrounds each tree to become saturated.

Conduct deep watering sessions at scheduled times throughout the summer. Check your region's local forecast to determine when deep watering will be beneficial for your trees.

Targeted Pruning Techniques

High winds and oppressive heat could impact the health of tree branches. Pruning trees is usually conducted during a dormant season. If tree limbs are unhealthy at other times of the year, targeted pruning techniques can be used. During a targeted pruning session, an assessment of the tree limbs should be conducted.

Efforts should be made to remove as little of each branch as possible. Address dangling branches, cracked branches, and wilted branches during each pruning session. Use loppers or handheld pruning shears to eliminate the damaged portion of each tree branch.

Pest Elimination

Hot weather and moisture can lead to pest infestations. Limiting the amount of weed growth that surrounds your trees' trunks could ward off pests. If pests are discovered on one or more trees, however, a pesticide should be used to eliminate them.

Purchase an organic pesticide that is formulated for use on trees. Follow the usage guidelines that a pesticide manufacturer has furnished.

Weed Prevention

Mow grass and remove weeds that surround the trunk of each tree.

Apply a thick layer of mulch around the base of each tree. Mulch will curb future weed growth. There are many organic and non-organic mulch products that will improve your landscape and prevent invasive weed species from growing on your residential property.
